Home Recording Tips
Even with the dramatic advancement of recording equipment and software, basic knowledge of the fundamentals of recording can go a long way toward improving workflow and the quality of your recordings. I am excited to be able to share my knowledge and experience. Feel free use the contact form to submit your questions or problems and I will get back to you personally or answer your question in a QuickTip on the Resources and Links page of this site.
Pro Tools Training
If you have decided to use the Pro Tools platform - or are considering it - I can help you optimize your system and master the many layers of tools that this powerful software provides.
Recording Classes
I have also developed three recording arts class curricula that are scalable in length and level to either fit into existing educational programs or be given as masterclasses or workshops.
'Introduction to Home Recording' is an entry level class covering basic audio concepts and their specific application in a project studio environment. This can be directed toward the casual or beginning user of music technology or, ideally, toward the music educator looking to enhance their own teaching through technology interaction.
'Computer-based Studio Maintenance' is geared toward students already in a professional recording education program or those wishing to develop professional level skills in a recording studio. This course updates and expands the traditional scope of studio maintenance to include data management techniques (naming conventions, backup schemes, archiving, etc), operating system troubleshooting and upkeep, file and session sharing, networking in a media environment and other topics that are now as important as daily responsibilities of the recording engineer as tape machine care and alignment once were. Traditional elements such as basic electronic concepts and wiring and electrical component care can also be covered in detail.
'Creative Production Techniques' is an advanced level course that assumes knowledge of general recording techniques and experience with the most common types of equipment found in the recording studio. In this course, student and instructor selected musical examples will be thoroughly analyzed in an effort to understand and learn from the techniques used to produce them. The goal is to examine a wide variety of production styles to give the students a broad base of knowledge from which to draw when working on their own projects or in a professional situation.
The details of these courses are best discussed in person, so please feel free to contact me if you are interested in more information or if you are an educator and would like to incorporate some of these concepts into your curriculum.
